South Africa detects new COVID variant

Written by on September 1, 2021

South African scientists have detected another coronavirus variant with multiple mutations.

Based on research, the new variant, now known as C.1.2. was first detected in May, and it has currently spread to most provinces in South Africa and to seven other countries in Africa, Europe, Asia, and Oceania.

But so far experts have not been able to determine if it is more contagious or if it can beat the immunity provided by vaccines before infection.

Its mutation is connected to other mutations of other variants that have high transmissibility and weak sensitivity to neutralizing antibodies.

Laboratory tests are underway to determine whether the antibodies can neutralize C.1.2. variant.
