Jail congestion in the country gradually being solved-BJMP

The leadership of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) admitted that the lack of jail facilities for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) remains a major challenge.
At a virtual press conference, BJMP spokesman, Jail C/Insp. Xavier Solda said that although jail congestion has been a problem for a long time, it is gradually being solved such as the construction of infrastructure with the help of the national and local government.
Solda said that their congestion rate in prisons has dropped to 397 percent from December 2020 to the present compared to 403 percent reported by the Commission on Audit (COA) in their Performance Audit for last year.
He said, out of the 103 facilities that they will build, 79 of them have been completed while 23 are still in progress while one has been revoked or terminated due to several reasons.
At present, their jail capacity is higher by over 100,000 compared to the current standard jail capacity of just over 36,000.
But Solda insisted that they have no problem spending the funds but they should still focus on building additional facilities which so far are still unlikely to happen due to the pandemic.
It also reported that vaccination is also continuing for their staff and even for persons deprived of liberty.
