Amendments to the economic provisions of the Constitution are necessary for fast internet connection

House Deputy Speaker Bernadette Herrera is confident that the economic provisions of the 1987 Constitution need to be amended to make the internet faster and more affordable in the country.
According to Herrera, the current era of the pandemic has seen the importance of cheap, fast and stable mobile and internet connections. But he said this is not the situation in the country due to the lack of competition between the two ruling telecommunications companies so Filipinos also have no choice but to endure the expensive and slow internet connection.
The legislator said that the entry of foreign companies into the country by relaxing certain government policies will help to improve the quality of products, services, and give consumers more choice and keep prices affordable. .
Under the 1987 Constitution, foreign ownership of public utilities such as telcos is limited to 40% and 60% for Filipino citizens or corporations.
