BIR must implement online registration for obtaining TIN

House Committee on Ways and Means Chairman Joey Salceda urged the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) to relax the in-person registration rule for obtaining taxpayer identification.

According to Salceda, banks and brokers already allow virtual appearance for account opening so the BIR should also consider it in obtaining the registration of taxpayers.

He said businessmen and taxpayers who register should be given relief because they contribute significantly to the country’s economy.

The legislator said,“It’s frankly redundant. Banks and brokers already allow virtual appearance in opening an account. Even notaries public allow it. If you can take an oath virtually, why should registering as a taxpayer, an act of transparency on your part, be any harder?”

At the same time, the legislator is also abolishing the P500 registration fee currently imposed by the BIR before allowing taxpayers to pay their taxes.

“It’s absurd to impose a fee to allow people to pay taxes. It’s the state who benefits from taxpayer compliance. Paying taxes is not a privilege that people will apply for. It’s a government rule we are happy to see people follow. So, we should not impose barriers to paying taxes,”Salceda said.
